Robbie Conal and Shepard Fairey on DnA Today
LA may be superficial, but it's "deeply" superficial*, says Robbie Conal, painter and agit-prop poster-maker; the region is home to two highly provocative artist/designer/street artists who've used the blank surfaces of LA and beyond as their canvas for social and political commentary. They are: Robbie, creater of numerous memorable posters that match uglified politicans' faces with witty satirical type; and Shepard Fairey, graphic designer, fine-art printmaker and street artist who created a sensation this year with his Obama: Hope poster.
Listen in to both of them on today's show; you can also hear the rest of my interview with Shep Fairey (see below right). And you can see Robbie's work on show, in No Spitting No Kidding, at Track 16 at Bergamot Station.
*By "deeply superficial," Robbie means that Angelenos have a sophisticated grasp on reading surface imagery, from a passing driver's clothing and car to a billboard fleeting by.
